After the death of her parents, a young girl is abandoned by her siblings and forced out of the family home. Left alone, the girl is eventually helped by a bitter woman who is the village outcast. As time passes, the old woman and the young girl become friends, and their bond gives them the strength and courage to reach out to a runaway slave. Color illustrations accompany the text of this story which is set in China during the 1400s.
